You Say Yes

Inspired by [personal profile] dialecticdreamer 's work Together With You (start the story here) and one line that really stood out to me.

<^>

It's not easy
To be known friends
With superheroes.

It's not comfortable
When people stare at you
Or even point, sometimes.

It's not fun
When they laugh
And ask you that stupid question.

"So have YOU ever saved the world?"

It's not easy
To tuck your anger away
Behind tight lipped smiles.

It's not comfortable
When they assume your answer
Is going to be a no, of course.

It's not fun
When you laugh too
And try to talk about anything else.

Because you know the answer.

It's not easy
To get a call in the night
That your friend is in the clinic.

Again.

It's not comfortable
When you get kidnapped
By some wannabe villain.

Again.

It's not fun
To keep the secrets,
And the trauma
And the nights crying
And the hidden fears
And the weakness
And the exhaustion
And hide all that away and laugh along with those idiots because you cannot tell them the truth and expose all that, because privacy maintains, and you're starting to feel like screaming that out at the top of your lungs
And you laugh and give the easy answer.

Again.

So when you go to your therapist
And you get to say it all
When your priest asks you
In the sanctity of the confessional
When you can safely say it
And they ask if you've ever saved the world

You say yes.

LOVELY

I'm so glad you felt inspired- this is an awesome peek at the real problems that having superheroes would cause.

It's intimate and honest.

I love it.

*nods* On the other hand...

Sometimes YES is the right answer depending on who you're talking to.

Other than that, what [personal profile] dialecticdreamer said. <3

Namaste, both of you.

I think my answer would be.. yes, but I never needed to..

Ok, story time: I think the statute of limitations has expired on this. I was part of a hacker collective way, way back in the early 80's... before there was an internet even. We.. well we took direct action. To prevent a nuclear Armageddon.

To cut a long story short, we hacked the guidance codes for ICBM's. On both sides. [yeah, hackers know no boundaries and owe no allegiance to any government] It was agreed that we would rig the the nukes so that at apogee of their trajectory, safely above the Earth's atmosphere, they'd explode.

I played a small part in this, a very small part. I've no idea who wrote the code that was inserted at source, or how it worked. My job was to get it to everyone [remember, no internet, but we had JANET] I even managed to get the reverse engineered Russian version back into the USSR.. hidden in ASCII art! I made sticky labels of it, and it went back with some athletes I believe, in plain sight on their suitcases.

Thankfully, it was never needed.

But yeah... I played a small part in kind-of saving the world.

and yes, for a long while, I was scared as hell about it. Because if the balloon had gone up, and all those nukes went off prematurely high up and harmlessly.. I somehow doubt we'd be thanked.

So.. yeah... I know those feels.

It's possible that the protections are in place still... the army uses a lot of legacy code. It's more possible that someone else has hacked the source code in the later generations of them. I'm fairly sure that at least one person in the collective was an insider... and who knows, maybe they still work in the field...

and yeah, I wondered about Spider... that story made my shoulder-blades itch it was so on the nose. Not to mention, I can't be 100% sure, but I think one of the collective went by the user name 'spider'... but that wasn't unusual.

I can understand the temptation if it was him. I mean, people were quietly despairing of nuclear death&destruction, and you knew it wasn't going to happen. The temptation to say something was immense.

Well ...

You have now been thanked.

Dude. You risked your life to save the world. It doesn't matter if nobody tried to launch the damn nukes. You did the work. THANK YOU.

Thanks... really! I mean, I'd made my peace with never being able to tell anyone... but, yeah. It's a hell of a relief to tell people, now, actually.

and yeah, the consequences of being caught were pretty daunting. I mean.. I was helping smuggle top secret stuff into and out of the USSR, with the intent to commit sabotage to several countries nuclear deterrent.

That's the sort of thing they tend to frown on rather...

I'm glad I could help.

The sort of thing that doesn't wind up in court because it scares politicians and generals, so it gets quietly buried in a ditch.

See above re: hero.

If there's anything at the end of Drake's equation, it's because people like you stepped in to keep a species from killing itself with stupidity.

Someone in the collective was think along those lines, they had the user name 'Drakes-answer' on one of BBS we used to co-ordinate stuff. Took me a while to figure that out.

and yes, as much as I'd like to think the UK wouldn't and doesn't do that... there's been a number of suspicious deaths of inconvenient people, some even quite recent, that make me think otherwise. And those are the ones they cocked up, so it did look a bit fishy.

I like this. I mean...I really do.

Also: us here in the Scarlet Phoenix Collective...we can relate to some of this.

Especially the parts about hiding things-because, while it's not the same things-we do have to hide things sometimes, and it's definitely not fun. :(

<3 for this.

Thank you!

*laughter* So she's now St. BairnSidhe? ;)

I came back around to this after your comment on it elsewidth ...

Yeah. I guess I do get it. There are certain things I can't talk about outside of certain Circles... no shit there I was, a quarter million miles off the Tannhauser Gate, c-beams flashing like a woods full of fireflies...

Oh. It's come to my attention that I am helping raise not one but TWO of your style of supervillain. *GRIN* So, when it comes to cape politics, I am firmly a mugwump. 50% grey in a stipple pattern, just like the old graphics terminals used to be. :D

I meant the poem. But hey, why not.

I know that feel, bro. My litany for bad days goes:
"No one is currently trying to assassinate me, I am not personally responsible for saving the world in the next 24 hours, and if this building/vehicle catches fire there is an entire atmosphere of breathable air into which we can flee."

*laughter* I used to know somebody who was a card-carrying Pope. We had all kinds of little adventures together... including hand-crafting our own little forced-air forge. Pope Curly (he was bald, of course) had a love of two things - pointy, and boom. The forge, of course, was to make more pointy... and besides, FIRE.
